Like the Ajmeri and Kashmere Gates, it was one of the fourteen gates to the fortified ‘city’ of Shahjahanabad, built by Shah Jahan after he shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi. It is one of the few gates that still exist; the British dismantled most of the others along with parts of the city wall after the revolt of 1857 had been supressed.
