Ferozshah Tughlaq built the Ferozshah Kotla fortress in 1354 as part of Firuzabad (the ‘fifth city of Delhi’); the spectacular Jami Masjid which was the largest of the seven mosques built by the Tughlaq dynasty lies within it. It was built on a series of underground cells and surrounded by a large courtyard with cloisters and a prayer hall; much of these have disappeared with only a rear wall standing on its Western side. Firozshah Kotla was abandoned in 1490. Historians record the building material from Ferozshah’s city was used to build Shah Jahan’s Shahjahanabad; one of the travesties of times gone by when subsequent dynasties destroyed structures built by previous rulers
