Qutbud-Din Aibak (1192- 1211) conceived the Qutub Minar as a tower of victory attached to the Quwwat-Ul-Islam Mosque. He could just complete the 1st storey; the 2nd- 4th storeys were completed by his successor Iltutmish (1211- 36). It was damaged by lightning in 1326 and 1368, after which Firuz Tughlaq (1351- 88) reconstructed the 4th storey, and added an additional one, making it a five storey structure. Later, in 1503, Sikander Lodi carried on some restorations in the upper stories. It is 238 feet high.
