This was built after Roshnara Begum’s death in 1671, in the middle of the then magnificent Roshnara Gardens (commissioned by her in the 1650s for her residence). Roshnara was the second daughter of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, a talented poetess, the mastermind behind Aurangzeb’s accession to the throne, his favourite sister, and by the time of her death one of the most notorious women in the Mughal kingdom. The structure is now surrounded by filth (as is the garden), a far cry from what is would have been in the past. My photograph has been taken from an angle that is intended to hide this filth and yet show the magnificence of the structure
