This was one of the fourteen gates to the fortified city of Shahjahanabad, built by Shah Jahan after he shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi. It was the only one not named for the direction it faced; it was named after the Sufi saint Hazrat Shah Turkman Bayaban whose tomb lies nearby
